In New Orleans, the riverboat is queen of the waterway. Never mind those huge cargo ships floating by every now and then. At the mouth of the Mississippi, one of these could take you to St. Louis or even Hannibal, MO – childhood home of Mark Twain himself, who was quite the able steamboat pilot in his day.

The Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge or New Cooper River Bridge connects Charleston and Mount Pleasant, SC. On our trip to Charleston, we decided to stay this time over in Mt. Pleasant. We drove over this bridge on the way into town, and I knew I needed to go home with a shot of it.
The weather played tricks on me as we experienced a lot of rain while in Charleston, but as the evening progressed the rain let up and I made the short walk to the park underneath the bridge. I thought maybe my best shot was going to be wide, taking in as much of the bridge and city lights as possible. But I made my way as close as I could get by heading out a long pier that extended into the river. I took this shot and didn’t bother looking for any others. This was what I wanted to come home with.

I have yet to say too much about my trip to New Orleans. It was a great time and it is certainly a beautiful city to take in.
I was surprised when I returned as to just how few photographs I had taken. I am usually extremely trigger happy when I am discovering a new place. I attribute this to being a bit more selective in my shots and taking some time without the camera in front of me and taking it all in.
I am not disappointed at all because I am very happy with a higher percentage of my photos than I have been on past trips.
This spot was on the top of my list. One of the most beautiful churches in a wonderful area- it certainly ranks up there at the top of what I have witnessed.
St. Louis Cathedral and Jackson Square – New Orleans

My wife and I were up early on our first full day in New Orleans. We strolled the few blocks to Jackson Square and then headed towards the river. They have a Riverwalk here that extends around the river bend from The French Market area south to around the Spanish Plaza. The river was calm and the lights were nice for this shot of the steamboat “Natchez” and the skyline and bridge beyond.

My! How time gets away from us. I ended 2012 with with a post and have not added anything new here for quite a while. 2013 is shaping up nicely as far as travel plans go. Kristine and I spent our anniversary in New Orleans. It was a quick trip – 4 days – 2 of them driving there and back.
What a gorgeous city! There are certainly leftover signs of devastation from Katrina, but this city was never about to die. It is still as vibrant, energetic, and wild as ever.
On the heels of that trip are plans in just a couple of weeks to head down south again – Charleston, Savannah, and Florida. It’s spring break for my daughter so we will hit Disney World and see my mother. I am looking forward to getting another chance to photograph Charleston again and it has been even longer since I’ve visited Savannah.
Later in the summer, Maine is on tap. We have a week planned and a house rented to celebrate my mother’s 80th. I will be trying to figure out a way to get to Acadia National Park as well.
As far as this blog, I hope to post regularly here again. It is good therapy to write something every day.
So for now, I leave with a recently edited photo of The Great Sand Dunes National Park from last fall.
